What is Viveka Yoga?

I teach a traditional style of yoga. I was fortunate to do my yoga training (over 500 hours) at Agama Yoga Centre with Barbara Brian. Barbara learnt directly from TKV Desikachar, who learnt from his father, the much honoured, T. Krishnamacharya.

I chose the name ‘Viveka’ yoga because the quality of ‘viveka’, which in Sanskrit means discernment or clear mindedness, has been important for me personally.

Without discernment one tends to be more judging and likely to act hastily. Hasty action is often based on pre-conceptions driven by fear, insecurity and ignorance … So terribly unproductive!  With discernment come greater awareness, more openness and better choices.

Discernment is very important to physical (asana) practice too. It assists us to care for our bodies and avoid overstraining. Over time, with the guidance of a trained teacher, we develop greater body awareness and can manage the demands of each posture, balancing feelings of stability, control and easefulness.

An important part of my yoga teacher training involved a study of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. The Yoga Sutras are aphorisms which define and describe yoga and offer advice on how to live. In the Yoga Sutras ‘viveka’ is said to help us achieve clearer perception by stilling our hectic minds. (Patanjali is attributed with synthesising what was known about yoga at the time – 2nd or 3rd AD – as it had been developed and passed down over centuries.

My studies of the Yoga Sutra continue and I like to incorporate my learning into classes.

Everyone can do yoga.

I enjoyed that! (class). I didn’t expect to enjoy it at all. My husband told me I should come because he thought I needed it.

Paula

As a beginner I came to your classes thinking that yoga would probably improve my flexibility.  However I have really enjoyed the fact that you present (the) many different aspects all of which contribute to a much broader view of what yoga practice can be.

I have always felt encouraged to do as much as I can but not more than I am actually capable and certainly not to feel that there is some particular level that I must achieve. There has always been the opportunity to ask questions.

John

I've really enjoyed being a part of Louise's classes in the mornings. The classes really set me up perfectly for the day ahead. Yoga helps me deal with my busy and sometimes stressful week; it serves to reset me in every way - mind and body so I feel relaxed and balanced. It introduces movement back into stiff or sore areas. And I am able to get a very personalized and professional experience.

Emma

I find the [movements] are helpful and varied. I am exercising muscles that I ordinarily wouldn’t use. Louise is aware of the differences and makes allowances for people who cannot do the complete .. routine.

Dermot

I find the gentle exercise procedures presented by Louise very helpful. I am an octogenarian, I appreciate the careful preparation of the group meetings which she leads; and her personal touch with each member of the group.

Matt

As a senior man, I find the exercise routines give me great assistance in daily movement. I especially use some of Louise’s breathing techniques useful for getting a restful nights sleep, as I used to struggle with this before.

Jack

Louise has a great way of engaging through her classes and very enjoyable.
